If you want to get your license before you arrive you can call Texas Parks & Wildlife in Austin, TX. at 800-895-4248 Monday thru Friday 8AM - 5PM Central Time. You can tell them the type license you need and charge it on a Master Card or Visa.
Hunting in Mexico the License runs about $250 which will include a tourist visa, a permit for one whitetail deer and a permit to bring two center fire rifles & 100 rounds of ammo per rifle. All ammo must match the caliber guns you are bringing, even the PRINTED brass hull & the box you carry them in. So if you hand load make sure everything matches!
Things You Will Need to Supply Sunset Outfitters With to Hunt In Mexico.
A photo copy of your drivers license.
-
A Good Guy Letter from local police or sheriff department on OFFICAL letter head.
-
Photo Copy of passport or birth certificate (Not the Hospital Copy).
Type of weapon, make, model, caliber & serial number. This is very important that everything is matching and correct so double check. Example if your gun is a Weatherby Mark V DO NOT substitute #5 for V.
Do You Have Guns We Can Use?
We prefer not to lend out our guns, because if you miss an animal then the first reaction is the gun is off. Example it is like driving someone else's car for the first time. It is going to feel different, the steering and the brakes. You feel more comfortable in your own car because you know it. It's the same feeling with a gun, you practice with it, so you know it.
What Is The Best Caliber Gun To Use?
We have found many of the times it is not the size that counts so much it is the placement of the bullet which is far more important. You can shoot a deer or wild board with a 300 Win. or a 7MM Mag. but if you hit it in the gut it's going to run and we might find it or not. But if you use a 6MM or a .243 and hit a deer in the heart or neck and a wild boar behind the ear, there's a good chance you will have a trophy for your wall at home. I can't stress how important it is you get out and practice shooting with the gun you are going to be hunting with . You might only get one shot and that's what might make your hunt successful or not.
What Is The Average Shot?
Shots can be as close as 20 yards or as far as 300 yards.
How Many Animals Will We See?
It is our goal to do everything possible to put you in front of as many animals as possible. We are not going to put you in an area where we know the animal you are hunting is not in the area. But we have no control on animal movement which is affected by the weather and moon phase which has a great effect on animal movement. Alot also has to do with the hunter, if he puts his time in the field and not in camp, also less movement in the stand and no foul odors in the air such as smoking, chewing tobacco or bug spray his chances are much higher on a trophy whitetail hunt. We can put you in front of 30 to 50 bucks. A turkey you can hear as many as 10 to 15 different gobblers and wild boar and javelinas to see from 50 to 100 is not uncommon.
What Is Our Success Rate?
I think every outfitter and guide out there hates this queston more than any other and the reason is because most hunts are booked on the percentages. But if every hunter could be in a guides boot for a season they would understand WHY!! We rebook 70% of the same hunters year after year, so if we weren't putting them in front of the animals why would they keep coming back? We will be glad to furnish you with a reference list upon request.
When Is The Rut?
On our Texas Hunts it is mid November thru mid December. On our Mexico hunts it is from mid December thru mid January.
